The SD05 and SD12are high energy, high ESD voltage EOS protectors.  The devices are available in 5V (SD05) and 12V (SD12) options making them ideal for EOS protection of VBus and user interface applications.  The SOD-323 package is footprint compatible with popular multilayer varistor (MLV) types in the 0805 outline.  The SD05 and SD12 devices offer significant efficiency, performance and long-term reliability advantages when compared to MLV types.  The SD05 and SD12 devices have a much lower idle current (efficiency) than MLVs, have a much tighter clamping ratio (VC/VRWM) for more precise protection and have no inherent “wear-out” mechanism as do MLVs that are subjected to multiple surge events over the product lifetime.
